Hotel check-in. Visit to Cesi, a small village overlooking Terni, where time seems to stand still. The village features several churches, including Santa Maria Assunta, known for its beautiful wooden choir and precious paintings.
Afterward, transfer to Carsulae for a tour of the Roman archaeological site. Free lunch.
In the afternoon, trekking from Carsulae to Romita di Cesi and back, along the path of the Franciscan Proto-Martyrs. The Romita is a peaceful Franciscan hermitage, where silence and spirituality dominate. Here, in 1213, St. Francis restored a chapel and wrote a text that foreshadowed the Canticle of the Creatures.
The loop trail is 6 km long, with a total duration of about 3 hours and an elevation gain of 350 meters.
Return to hotel, dinner, and overnight stay.Transfer to the archaeological site of Carsulae for a self-guided tour. Free lunch.
In the afternoon, circular trekking route from Carsulae to Romita di Cesi and back, following the path of the Franciscan Proto-Martyrs. The Romita hosts a Franciscan hermitage where silence and spirituality reign—St. Francis visited in 1213, restored a chapel, and composed a text that anticipated the Canticle of the Creatures.
The 6 km route takes about 3 hours, with a 350-meter elevation gain.
Return to hotel, dinner, and overnight stay.
After breakfast, transfer to the Sacro Speco Franciscan Sanctuary, one of Umbria’s most important Franciscan sites. Located near San Urbano di Narni at 600 meters above sea level, it was built near the caves where St. Francis used to retreat in prayer.
Following the sanctuary visit, drive to Narni. Along the way, you can admire the Albornoz Fortress from the outside or visit it with a short detour.
Free visit to Narni’s historic center and guided tour of Narni Underground—a mysterious site featuring crypts, churches, cisterns, and a room once used by the tribunal of the Holy Inquisition, complete with graffiti etched by its prisoners.
In the early afternoon, reach the Bridge of Augustus area to begin a riverside trek to Stifone. This flat trail runs along the Nera River and offers stunning panoramic views. The round-trip route is 12 km and takes about 3 hours.
